In real estate terms, any structure taller than 75 feet is considered a high-rise.

Cons of high-rise buildings:

  • It is more difficult to evacuate in an emergency, such as a fire, the higher the floor. It's even more difficult if you have family members who are disabled.

  • A high-rise building's average construction cost per square foot is 20-25 per cent higher than a low-rise building's, making it a more expensive investment.

  • Cleaning and maintaining a high-rise building's exteriors can be both costly and dangerous.

  • During earthquakes, taller buildings are more likely to be damaged.
