Types of dams in tamilnadu

 


Tamil Nadu has various types of dams, including major ones like Mettur and Bhavani Sagar, with types ranging from earthen and gravity masonry to gravity & masonry and earthen/gravity & masonry. Major dams serve purposes like irrigation, hydropower, and drinking water, and include famous examples like the Mettur Dam, Aliyar Reservoir, and Vaigai Dam. 

Types of dams by material and design

  • Earthen: Constructed from earth and soil.
  • Gravity and Masonry: Built with concrete or stone, relying on their weight to hold back water.
  • Earthen/Gravity & Masonry: Dams that are a combination of both earthen and gravity/masonry types. 
Examples of major dams in Tamil Nadu
  • Aliyar Reservoir: An earthen/gravity & masonry dam located on the Aliyar River in Coimbatore district.
  • Amaravathi Dam: An earthen/gravity & masonry dam built across the Amaravathi River, a tributary of the Kaveri.
  • Bhavanisagar Dam: A major dam constructed across the Bhavani River in Erode district.
  • Krishnagiri Dam: A dam on the Thenpennai river.
  • Mettur Dam: A major hydroelectric station and tourist spot on the Cauvery River in Salem district.
  • Sathanur Dam: Located across the Thenpennai river.
  • Vaigai Dam: A dam on the Vaigai River.
  • Chittar Dams: Two earthen dams, Chittar I and Chittar II, are located in Kanniyakumari.
  • Emerald Dam: A gravity and masonry dam used for hydroelectric power in the Nilgiris district.
