What Is a Gable Roof?

A gable roof is a triangular-shaped roof with two sloping sides that meet at a ridge in the middle, forming a peak. It is one of the most common and simple roof styles, known for its durability, efficient water drainage, and cost-effectiveness in construction. This type of roof is often found in homes and buildings as it allows for better ventilation and space within the attic.

   Types of Gable Roof
There are multiple types of gable roofs for architectural purposes, such as:

 Front gable
·        Cross gable
·        Dutch gable
·
Side gable
What is a Hip Roof

A hip roof is a type of roof where all sides slope downward to meet the walls, forming a uniform shape with no vertical ends. This design makes it more stable and durable, especially in areas prone to strong winds or heavy rainfall. Types of hip roofs include simple hip roofs, cross hip roofs, and pyramid hip roofs, each offering unique features suited to different architectural styles and functional needs.

 What is a roof ridge?

A roof ridge is the highest point of a roof. It’s where two roof slopes meet and come together to form a peak at the top of your roof.

When looking at your roof, the ridge is the horizontal line that runs the length at the top of the two roof slopes.

ridge piece (or ridge cap) in a roof is the durable material covering the highest horizontal line, where two sloping roof sections meet, acting as the final, watertight seal against weather while providing a finished look

   What is a Rafter?

A rafter is a sloping wooden beam that supports the roof of a building. Rafters run from the roof's ridge or peak down to the wall plate, creating the framework that holds the roof sheathing and roofing materials. They are essential components in pitched roof construction, providing stability and shape to the roof structure and ensuring that the roof can withstand external loads like wind, rain, and snow.

·        Common Rafter: Runs perpendicularly from the ridge board to the wall plate.

   Roof eaves

Roof eaves are the overhanging edges of a roof that extend beyond the building's walls, serving crucial functions like directing rainwater away, preventing wall damage, providing shade, regulating indoor temperature, and allowing for roof ventilation.

Barge board

Bargeboards located at the gable end or side of a roof. Used to protect the roof timbers of a building, bargeboards can also have a significant impact on the general aesthetics of the exterior of your property

What are Purlins on a Roof?

Purlins are horizontal structural members used in roof construction to support the roof deck and transfer loads to the building's framework.

bressummer is a large, horizontal, load-bearing beam in architecture, especially timber-framed buildings, that supports a wall.

wall plate is a load-bearing structural member used horizontally and part of a timber framework.
