METHOD OF SLUM CLEARANCE -TS

Slum clearance involves two main methods:
 complete removal and on-site improvement.
Complete removal tears down old buildings to rebuild. Improvement repairs existing homes and adds basic water and electrical services.
These methods are often guided by national or regional urban renewal laws.
Here are the primary methods for dealing with slums in detail:
1. The Improvement Method (In-Situ Upgrading)
This method upgrades the current area without forcing people to move. It is used when buildings are in decent shape and just need better basic services. What it involves: Paving roads, installing drainage systems, building public toilets, and adding clean water taps.Real-World Benefit: It causes very little disruption to daily life and daily jobs.
2. The Complete Removal Method
This method completely clears a highly decayed or hazardous slum area. Dilapidated, unsafe buildings are torn down to make room for modern infrastructure, parks, or commercial developments.Re-housing: Residents are typically relocated to transit camps or permanent, government-built housing.

Challenges:
Removing communities too far from the city often creates financial hardships by separating workers from their jobs.3. The Open Plot SchemeLocal authorities clear the land, divide it into neat empty plots, and give them to the original slum dwellers.
How it works
Residents are given a safe piece of land and basic building supplies to construct their own homes, promoting community investment.
Legal Frameworks and ManagementIn regions with high urban growth, such as India, these processes are supported by laws like the Slum Areas (Improvement and Clearance) Act, 1956. Authorities use these guidelines to declare areas as slums, protect tenants from illegal evictions, and plan safe redevelopment. For more localized information on how these policies are implemented, refer to resources like the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Information Handbook.
