Planning a building requires the systematic collection of five core categories of data: site and location details, environmental and climatic factors, legal and zoning regulations, user requirements, and technical infrastructure details. Gathering this information thoroughly prevents structural issues, budget overruns, and compliance problems. 

1. Site and Location Data
Understanding the exact physical condition of the property is critical for foundation design and orientation. 
  • Topography & Contours: Details about the slope and elevation of the land.
  • Soil Investigation: Soil bearing capacity, type (e.g., clay, sand), and water table levels.
  • Boundaries & Dimensions: Exact plot measurements, total area, and surrounding access roads.
  • Existing Infrastructure: Location of nearby structures, trees, and markers. 
2. Legal and Regulatory Data
Building plans must strictly adhere to local and national governmental authorities. 
  • Zoning & Land Use: Whether the plot is designated for residential, commercial, or industrial use.

This data ensures the building caters to its intended purpose and occupants. 
  • Space Program: The number, type, and size of rooms required (e.g., bedrooms, office cubicles, storage).
  • Occupancy Load: The maximum number of people expected to occupy the building at any given time (for exit and emergency planning).
  • Accessibility: Requirements for differently-abled individuals (e.g., ramps, elevators, door widths). 
5. Utility and Infrastructure Data
Essential for connecting the building to city grids and internal services. 
  • Water Supply: Connection points for municipal water, borewells, or overhead storage.
  • Electrical Power: Proximity to power grids, transformer locations, and load estimates.
  • Sewage & Waste: Locations for sewer lines, septic tanks, and solid waste disposal.
