A venturimeter is a differential pressure device used to measure the fluid flow rate in a pipeline. It works on the principles of the continuity equation and Bernoulli's theorem. Venturimeters are classified into three primary types based on their installation orientation:
Types of Venturimeters
- Horizontal Venturimeter: Installed in horizontal pipelines. It operates with the highest kinetic energy and lowest potential energy. This is the most common configuration in industrial and laboratory settings.
- Vertical Venturimeter: Mounted vertically to measure upward or downward fluid flow. It features maximum potential energy and minimum kinetic energy.
Core Components
- Cylindrical Inlet: A straight section attached to the pipe, used to measure initial high pressure.
- Converging Section: A conical part where the cross-sectional area gradually decreases, causing the fluid velocity to increase and pressure to drop.
- Throat: A cylindrical section of minimum area where the velocity reaches its maximum and the pressure reaches its minimum.
Common Variations by Material & Construction
While orientation dictates the primary function, venturimeters can also be categorized by their build:
- Cast Iron / Ductile Iron: Standard heavy-duty meters used for high-volume, continuous water and clean liquid flows.
- Metal Fabricated / Plastic Insert: Designed to be inserted directly into the pipeline, often preferred for specific chemical or low-loss applications.
