VENTURIMETER AND ITS TYPES - TS

 


A venturimeter is a differential pressure device used to measure the fluid flow rate in a pipeline. It works on the principles of the continuity equation and Bernoulli's theorem. Venturimeters are classified into three primary types based on their installation orientation: 

Types of Venturimeters
  • Horizontal Venturimeter: Installed in horizontal pipelines. It operates with the highest kinetic energy and lowest potential energy. This is the most common configuration in industrial and laboratory settings. 

  • Vertical Venturimeter: Mounted vertically to measure upward or downward fluid flow. It features maximum potential energy and minimum kinetic energy. 

  • Inclined Venturimeter: Positioned at an angle within a vertical plane. This type balances both potential and kinetic energy. 

Core Components
Regardless of the type, every venturimeter consists of four main parts: 

  1. Cylindrical Inlet: A straight section attached to the pipe, used to measure initial high pressure.
  2. Converging Section: A conical part where the cross-sectional area gradually decreases, causing the fluid velocity to increase and pressure to drop.
  3. Throat: A cylindrical section of minimum area where the velocity reaches its maximum and the pressure reaches its minimum.
  4. Diverging Section: A conical area that gradually expands back to the original pipe diameter to recover the lost pressure. 

Common Variations by Material & Construction
While orientation dictates the primary function, venturimeters can also be categorized by their build: 
  • Cast Iron / Ductile Iron: Standard heavy-duty meters used for high-volume, continuous water and clean liquid flows.
  • Metal Fabricated / Plastic Insert: Designed to be inserted directly into the pipeline, often preferred for specific chemical or low-loss applications.
